In these uncertain times, in a city which is now the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic one thing remains certain: our most vulnerable communities have been left out of “relief packages” and need our support!
The Laundry Workers Center has been providing support for these vulnerable workers since its founding in 2011. We have organized hundreds of laundromat, restaurant and warehouse workers throughout New York City. Many need urgent help that is not available elsewhere.
We are launching an Emergency Response Fund to provide this emergency help to our members to provide funds for food and medicine for those who have lost work, are sick or are otherwise impacted by the COVID-19 virus. Designated as essential workers, our members must continue to show up on the frontline of the pandemic in laundromats, restaurants and warehouses. Many now face loss of income because of reduced hours or closed workplaces. Few have paid sick leave. Laundromat workers are at greatest risk, handling bags of soiled laundry in overcrowded workplaces without basic protective equipment -- masks, gloves, sanitizers. If they or any family member gets sick, they won't get paid if they stay home. These workers who serve the people of our city in these difficult times will have no money for food; no money for necessary medicine.
Here's how you can help. Donate below to the LWC Emergency Response Fund and sign our petition to demand health and safety, paid sick leave and protective gear free of charge to the workers. Support low-wage immigrant workers! Any money you give will provide funds for necessities such as food and medicine for our most vulnerable workers.
It's not just our laundry workers who are in danger. Many of our community members will not be able to get government support because lawmakers disapprove of their immigration status. You can help by putting pressure on lawmakers to protect and support low wage immigrant workers.
